Teacher who had sex with 15-year-old ex-pupil jailed

A maths teacher at a private school in Redbridge was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 14 November to four years for having an intimate relationship with a former pupil.

John Wunderle, aged 35 (18.09.79) had pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

Wunderle, who was head of mathematics at a private School in Redbridge, had been engaged by the victim’s parents during Autumn 2013 to tutor her in maths in preparation for her GCSEs.

In May 2014 when tuition was not longer needed, Wunderle continued to meet with the girl at his home address and at her home address when her parents were out.

On 5 June 2014, the victim’s parents were notified by a neighbour that a man had gone into their address with their daughter. The victim’s mother arrived home to check on her welfare to find John Wunderle in her daughter’s bedroom.

He was immediately suspended from his position as Head of Maths and on 7 June was arrested on suspicion of having sexual activity with a child. He was released on police bail to mid September with a condition not to contact the victim.

On Friday, 1 August, Wunderle was arrested by officers for breach of bail conditions when he was stopped while driving his car in Woodford Green and the victim was found to be in the back of the car covered by a blanket.

He was charged as follows:

Sexual activity with a child, contrary to section 9(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Sexual activity with a child, contrary to section 9(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Sexual activity with a child, contrary to section 9(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, contrary to section 17(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, contrary to section 17(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Wanderle has been issued with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for life and will appear on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

On Saturday, 2 August, John Wunderle, appeared at Redbridge Magistrates Court to face charges. He was remanded in custody.

On 20 October at Snaresbrook Crown Court Wanderle pleaded guilty to the five charges and was remanded in custody for sentencing on 14 November 2014.
