November 4, 2014, 1:47 pm

A man from Haringey who made anti-Semitic comments on a bus has been sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment following an investigation by the MPS Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC).

Ian Campbell, 43 (08.03.1972), of Bowes Road, N11, was sentenced to 16 weeks’ imprisonment at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 31 October, after pleading guilty to racially/religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress on 9 October at the same court.

Campbell also received an additional four weeks imprisonment for breaching a conditional discharge issued for an unrelated theft offence.

Police were called by a female passenger on a route 102 bus travelling between Golders Green and Henlys Corner, N2, at around 18:20hrs on Tuesday, 16 September, after Campbell started making comments of an anti-Semitic nature.

Officers from the RTPC and Transport for London Workplace Violence Unit launched an investigation, which led to Campbell being identified through CCTV and was arrested on 25 September.

Chief Superintendent Matt Bell, Roads and Transport Policing Command said: “The Roads and Transport Policing Command are committed to keeping London’s transport network safe and this sentence sends a strong message that this type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and will result in tough penalties. If you do encounter this type of incident, we encourage you to report it to police.”

Steve Burton, TfL’s Director of Enforcement, said: “All of our customers deserve to use our services without fear of being abused. Offensive behaviour like this will not be tolerated. This was an appalling incident and we are pleased to see the offender jailed for his crimes.

“Overall London’s transport network is a safe, low crime environment. Over ten million passengers use our public transport services each day with very few ever experiencing or witnessing crime. We will continue to work closely with the Metropolitan Police Service to ensure every journey on our bus network is safe, secure and reliable.”
