Man found guilty of string of sex offences in Bedford

November 4, 2014, 6:01 pm

A 33 year old man from Bedford has today (Nov 4) been found guilty of a string of sex offences on a young woman who he attacked as she made her way home following a night working in a pub.

Abdul Ghafoor, a married father of four from Nash Road in Bedford, was found guilty of eight offences and was told by the judge that he would be considering a life sentence for Ghafoors crimes.

The attack happened late on Friday May 30 as the victim was walking along Cardington Road, Bedford. The victim was texting her sister when Ghafoor grabbed her, pulled her into some nearby bushes and subjected her to a prolonged series of sexual assaults.

The jury was told during the trial that the victim managed to text her sister with the message “help me” before Ghafoor smashed her phone and continued the attack.

Ghafoor was caught after the victims sister had called Bedfordshire Police who sent officers out on an area search. On seeing officers, Ghafoor tried to run away but was quickly caught and remanded.

Speaking after todays guilty verdicts, Detective Inspector Scott Winton from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit said: “We are pleased that the jury has returned this decision and I was also pleased to hear the judge say that he considers Ghafoor a danger to the public and would be considering a life sentence when he returns to Luton Crown Court on December 19 for sentencing.

“This was a deplorable crime that has shattered the life of a young woman who had everything to live for. I just hope that the knowledge that Ghafoor faces a long time behind bars will go some way in helping her as she tries to return to a normal life with the love and support of her family.”
