Birmingham man detained for stabbing his neighbour in street

November 19, 2014, 5:07 pm

A Birmingham man who stabbed his neighbour to death outside a newsagents has been detained indefinitely after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Adum Osman, aged 36, from Thornhill Road, Handsworth, was given a hospital order following a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court today (Wednesday 19 November). He was assessed by three psychiatric consultants who all determined that he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia

Osman stabbed Leon Courtney Davis, aged 55 also from Thornhill Road, in the stomach with a kitchen knife on January 31 this year after he became convinced that his neighbour was harassing him – due to his illness.

The court heard that on the morning of his death Leon walked into the Sandhu Newsagents in Thornhill Road as part of his daily routine. As, he walked away from the shop, he was approached by Osman and attacked.

Osman then pinned Leon Davis to the floor and stabbed him in the stomach several times before standing up and calmly walking away into the store to buy cigarettes. Mr Davis was given emergency first aid and the scene, before being taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police officers arrived at the store and found Osman still holding a knife and arrested him.

Osman told officers Mr Davis had caused noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour, but there was nothing to substantiate these claims and Osman was later detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a secure mental health facility. He was later charged with the murder of Leon Davis.

Leon Davis, a father and grandfather, who suffered from a chronic lung disease, which affected his breathing and energy levels, lived with his father and had been a skilled carpenter/cabinet maker.

His family at the time of his death, said: “Leon Davis was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother and nephew, who was cruelly taken away from his close family and friends prematurely. His death leaves an empty space in our hearts; he will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

The family would like to thank members of the local community who stopped and helped The police to apprehend the person responsible for the death of our beloved Leon, and all those that have come forward to give evidence to the police about events that took place at the time of his death.”
