New images issued following the murder of Kieran McGrath – Tameside

October 29, 2014, 12:55 pm

Police have issued the images of two people who may have seen something suspicious following the murder of Kieran McGrath.

At around 10.25pm on Saturday 4 October 2014, 26-year-old Kieran was found collapsed outside Ashton police station on Manchester Road suffering serious injury.

He made his way to the police station after being shot. Police offers and paramedics who had been called to the station tried to resuscitate him but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene within minutes.

Kieran had been inside the Sheldon Arms pub with friends from around 8.50pm.

At 9.55pm, two men on a Suzuki Bandit 600cc motorbike drove onto the car park of the pub and waited for five minutes. One of them walked to the back of the pub before both drove to the front at 10pm.

At around 10:20pm, Kieran walked out of the main entrance and onto the car park before walking to a white Audi A3.

When he reached the car, four shots were fired in his direction with one hitting him.

Following the shooting, the bike was seen on Charlestown Road, Blackley at 10.26pm before it was found burnt out on Boggart Hole Clough on Tuesday 7 October 2014 near to the entrance of Pinfold Avenue.

Post mortem results show Kieran died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A 30-year-old man handed himself into police and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was bailed until 9 December 2014.

A 23-year-old man earlier arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail pending further inquiries until 4 November 2014.

Now police are asking whether anyone recognises the men who were inside the pub and whether anyone saw a Suzuki motorbike, believed to have been used in the getaway.

Detective Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson said: “This is a fast moving investigation and we have a number of lines of enquiry we are following up. However, although arrests have been made, we are still appealing for information.

“We know the motorbike was stolen from the Stockport area in June 2013 but we are trying to establish the whereabouts of the bike over the last 18 months. Do you recognise it or have you seen it in storage anywhere? There is a chance it may have swapped hands a number of times and had false number plates. The bike may have also been seen driving around the Greater Manchester area, especially between 9pm and 10.30pm on the night of the shooting. Again, if you have any information, please call us.

“We are also keen to speak to the two men in the images taken from the pub CCTV. Both travelled in separate cars and arrived at the Lord Sheldon at 9.30pm. They walked inside and sat overlooking the car park before they left together at the exact time as the shooting.

“They drove off before the remaining car, a dark coloured 1998 – 2003 VW Golf was picked up at 7am the following morning. Do you recognise the men or did you see them sitting in the pub? If you did, get in touch. It is important to stress we are treating these two men as witnesses and I would appeal for them to come forward as they may have seen something suspicious.

“We are keeping an open mind as to why this happened but we know Kieran had fall outs with people over the past year. We need to understand the full detail of these so that we can understand any potential motive of attackers.”
