Haroon Rashid Aswat extradited from the UK to the US to face terrorist-related charges

Haroon Rashid Aswat, 40 (22.09.74), has today, Tuesday, 21 October, been extradited from the UK to the US.

Aswat, a British citizen from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire is wanted by authorities in the United States for terrorist-related offences. He is alleged to have travelled to the US in late 1999 with the intention of setting up a Jihadist training camp in Oregon.

He was originally arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Extradition Unit at RAF Northolt on 7 August 2005 following receipt of a US request for his extradition; having been deported from Zambia.

The warrants issued on behalf of the US authorities allege:

1) Between 1.10.99 and 30.04.00 conspired with others to control and manage an association of persons in Bly, Oregon, who would be organised and trained, or organised and equipped, for the purpose of enabling them to be employed for the use or display of physical force in promoting a political object, namely to make hijrah to, and to fight jihad in, Afghanistan.

2) Between 1.10.99 and 30.04.00 conspired with others to control and manage an association of persons in Bly, Oregon, who would be organised and trained, or organised and equipped, in such manner as to arouse reasonable apprehension that they were organised and either trained or equipped for the purpose of enabling them to be employed for the use or display of physical force in promoting a political object, namely to make hijrah to, and to fight jihad in, Afghanistan.

Earlier today Aswat was taken from Broadmoor Hospital to a UK airport accompanied by MPS extradition officers.

Officers were met at the airport by representatives from the US authorities who have escorted him on the flight to America.
