Police name Hemel Hempstead murder victim

Police investigating a murder which took place in Hemel Hempstead this weekend, can now confirm that the victim is 63-year-old Thomas Baird.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Joint Major Crime Unit have been investigating a house fire which occurred at his home in Westerdale at around 12.06am on Saturday, March 2.

A post mortem has taken place yesterday (Sunday, March 3) and has concluded that Thomas died of trauma to the head and neck, and stab wounds to the chest.

A 30-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead remains in police custody at this time having been arrested on Saturday (March 2) on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Ross is leading the investigation. He said: “His family are understandably extremely upset by the events this weekend and we are providing support to them.

“I know this type of incident can cause a lot of concern in the community but I would reassure people that we believe the victim and the suspect knew each other.”
