Man jailed for rape

March 8, 2013, 5:04 pm

A man who raped a vulnerable teenager has been jailed.

Nishaan Mehta (22/11/1987), formerly of Banff Road, was found guilty of rape following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Today, Friday 8 March 2013, he was jailed for five years and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.

Mehta met the 19-year-old victim as she left Entourage nightclub in the early hours of Saturday 19 November 2011.

The victim was drunk and he offered to help her get back to her Oldham home.

Instead he took her back to his student accommodation on Banff Road, Rusholme, where he raped her.

He then phoned her a taxi but the driver threw her out of his taxi on Plymouth Grove because she had no money to pay.

In a distressed state another taxi driver picked her up and took her home.

Mehta was arrested after DNA was recovered from the victim.

Detective Constable Michael OConnor, said: “Mehta could clearly see the victim was in no state to consent to any sexual activity and it is a reflection of his character that he took her back to his home address, took advantage of her and raped her.

“She has had relive her ordeal in court and I must credit her for standing up to Mehta and helping ensure justice has been done.

“The tragic reality that this case highlights is that there are people out there who will take advantage of those who are vulnerable, whether that is through drink or anything else.

“I would like to stress how important it is to stay with friends on a night out and not go off with strangers.

“I must also reserve praise to the taxi driver who saw the victim in a distressed state and instead of turning a blind eye to the situation came to her aid and took her home.”
