Man arrested after Newcastle assault

March 12, 2013, 3:50 pm

A man has been arrested after an assault and damage in Newcastle.

It happened in the early hours of Sunday, March 10, when four men left Blue Velvet at Dean Street at about 4.20am, and they flagged down a passing taxi.

As the four approached the taxi, a group of men standing across the street shouted racial abuse towards them. The four got into the taxi, which pulled away but stopped at traffic lights at Dean Street.

One of the suspects picked up a traffic cone and threw it at the front seat passenger, who had the window down. The 23-year-old suffered a cut just above his right eye. The traffic cone was then thrown at the taxi, causing damage.

The four alerted passing police officers, who attended and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault, and also criminal damage. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them on 101 ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously onĀ 0800 555 111.
