COLCHESTER: Murder investigation progressing

March 11, 2013, 1:55 pm

Essex Police are renewing their appeal for information about two men wanted for questioning in relation to the death of Thomas Brittain.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hall, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: “Jack Hummerstone and Andre Vella should make contact with police as soon as possible.

“If anyone knows of their current whereabouts they should make contact with police by calling 999 immediately. I would also advise members of the public not to approach them.

“It is possible that someone may be harbouring either one, or both, of these men and if that is the case I would urge that person or persons to think very carefully about their own position. They could be committing an offence by assisting a person wanted by police.

“The investigation is progressing; we have a number of leads that are being actively followed up. Items recovered at the scene have been sent for forensic examination; however searches remain on-going at this time.”

He added that as part of these enquiries, Essex Police Marine Officers had carried out searches along the banks of, and in, the River Colne.

DCI Hall also said that investigations into the motive for the attack were continuing. “At this time no clear motive has been established and I am not prepared to speculate as to reasons for Mr Brittains’ death,” he said.

“I believe Mr Brittain was specifically targeted, but I cannot go into further details at this time. Nor at this time can I comment on any previous incidents involving Mr Brittain.”

Specially trained Family Liaison Officers are in touch with family members and continuing to offer them their support.

Her Majestys Coroner will today open an inquest into Mr Brittains death.
