At Newcastle Crown Court today Guy was sentenced to six years and Atkinson was sentenced to two years.
Detective Inspector Paul Woods said: “These men carried out a vicious attack on a total stranger which left their victim seriously injured in hospital.
“Just days after the assault, Guy cut through a gas pipe putting dozens of homes at risk and causing concern and distress to the occupants.
“Now Atkinson and Guy are starting significant sentences and I hope that the people whose lives have been affected by their behaviour will take comfort from the fact that justice has been done today.”
