Shoplifting gang jailed

December 5, 2012, 1:24 pm

Four shoplifters who came to Cambridge to carry out a £6,000 stealing spree have been jailed.

Vasile Grozea, 32, Maria Ion, 31, Monica Ursachi, 24, and Alexandru Brebeanu, 23, were caught with clothing worth almost £6,500 on October 11.

The gang had bagfuls of clothing from GAP, Warehouse, Next, River Island, Superdry, JD Sport and TK Maxx.

Ursachi and Ion were arrested after being spotted concealing items by security staff at TK Maxx.

CCTV operators then alerted officers to Grozea and Brebeanu after they were seen with a suspected foil-lined bag.

Police stopped their vehicle in Park Terrace and arrested the pair.

A large amount of clothing was seized from the car. Officers took the clothing back to the stores to value the haul.

The four, all of Old Church Road, London, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal at Cambridge Crown Court on Monday (December 3).

Brebeanu and Ursachi were each jailed for nine months, while Grozea and Ion were given eight-month sentences.

Inspector Steve Poppitt said: “These four came to Cambridge with the sole intention of stealing as much as they could from shops in the city.

“We take shoplifting very seriously and work closely with partners such as Cambridge Business Against Crime, store security and Cambridge City Council CCTV operators to identify and arrest offenders.

“Such theft is not a victimless crime as it leads to increased prices for other shoppers because companies have to replace stock and invest in security.

“Shoplifters are not welcome in Cambridge and offenders should be warned they face being put before the courts.”
