Thieves stole tools from building site then broke into bank in Wigan

November 21, 2012, 11:07 am

Opportunist burglars stole tools from a building site and then broke into a nearby bank.

No cash was stolen from Lloyds TSB on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton when it was targeted sometime between 8.10pm on Wednesday 14 November and 8.45am on Thursday 15 November 2012.

The offenders broke in and tried to prise open a cash machine, but left empty handed after their attempts failed.

Tools were left behind, and officers believe these had been stolen from a building site on Leopold Street, between the same time frame as the burglary at the bank.

The offenders broke into a portacabin on the site and stole tools from inside.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to either burglary.

Detective Constable Richard Willoughby said: “While we are keeping an open mind, we strongly believe that the same offenders who stole the tools opportunistically tried to then break into the bank.

“It is a testament to the security measures in place that no cash was stolen, but property was damaged and we are doing everything we can to trace those responsible.

“I would urge anyone who saw this suspicious behaviour in the area last Wednesday evening, or in the early hours of Thursday, to call us.”
