Police training on the streets

November 26, 2012, 4:36 pm

People in Wymondham will see more police on the beat in the coming weeks as student officers take part in community-based training.

The Constabularys training department will be hosting role plays in the streets involving students in mock arrests, to give them a taste of real-life police work.

Training officer PC Paul Ridgway, of the Constabularys Operational Training Centre based at police headquarters in Wymondham, said: “People can be reassured that the sight of extra police is not a sign of extra crime but work being carried out in the community to better equip officers of the future with the skills they need.

“This is a new type of training where we are assessing the students in a live and public environment whilst also providing extra high visibility patrols.

“We encourage members of the public to engage with officers, as this will help further enhance their skills.”

The assessment staff involved are all fully-trained in personal safety and first aid and are able to respond to any incidents as they arise.

Initial reassurance patrols will be in the immediate area of Wymondham but will move to locations elsewhere in the county as officers gain knowledge and experience.
