Man jailed for rape

November 26, 2012, 4:25 pm

A man who raped a woman on her doorstep was traced after dropping his
mobile phone during the attack.

Jean Elin, 34 (4.05.78), saw the woman in Camberwell as she returned
home from a night out.

He assaulted her before making off – but was traced and arrested within
four days by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Sapphire

Elin, of Barking Road, Plaistow, pleaded not guilty to two counts of
rape against the 24-year-old woman, but was today convicted at Inner
London Crown Court.

He was jailed for nine years.

On Saturday 14 January the victim was returning home after a night out
in south London. She left a club and travelled on a bus, but missed her
usual stop and ended up in an area she was unsure of at around 03:00hrs.

She decided to walk to her house, but when she reached home she was seen
by Elin who was driving past.

He attacked her on the porch of her home.

The victim was heard screaming by a friend who came to her assistance,
scaring Elin off.

The friend noticed a phone on the floor and recovered it.

Police were alerted and examined the mobile. Several numbers in the
phone were contacted, including one for a woman who advised officers
that she had lent her car to Elin on the night concerned.

When he had returned it shortly after 04:00hrs he stated he had just
lost his phone.

Further enquiries led police to Elin – who was found to be variously
using two aliases – and he was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Acting Detective Sergeant Richard Huggins, of Sapphire, said: “We
welcome the guilty verdict, which hopefully brings some measure of
justice to the victim.

“She was returning to the safety of her home when the opportunistic Elin
struck and raped her. He then prolonged the ordeal by refusing to plead
guilty when brought before the court.

“I would like to pay tribute to the woman and her family who supported
our investigation and the subsequent prosecution.”
