Man jailed for Adrian Cooksey manslaughter

November 19, 2012, 3:27 pm

The following statement is to be attributed to Detective Chief Inspector Ian Saunders, Wiltshire police:

“Today (19 November 2012) at Bristol Crown Court, Richard Elmes, 50, of Melksham has been sentenced to 5 years and two months imprisonment for the manslaughter of Adrian Cooksey and a separate charge of perjury.

“Adrian was assaulted in the early hours of Sunday 8th March 2009 in Spa Road, Melksham and later died from his injuries.

“The two men had been socialising together and were on their way home. There was an argument between them which resulted in Elmes delivering the blow which caused Adrian to fall and hit his head. Elmes then left the scene; he made no attempt to get Adrian any medical help.

“For three years, Richard Elmes continually and deliberately lied about his involvement to police and lied under oath.

“Throughout this investigation we have worked closely with Adrians family, it been an extremely difficult time for them and we hope that they can now find some peace of mind.”

The following statement is on behalf of Adrian Cookseys family:

“Whatever sentence passed would never be enough to satisfy us.

“Richard Elmes has continued to lie and avoid the truth.

“This was supposed to be our Dad’s friend. It has now been clarified that he punched our Dad to the ground and left him lying there.

“How anyone can live with this and continue to lie to save their own skin deserves to have the key thrown away.

“Our family has been dealt a life sentence by this man.”
