Keep ’em peeled – a look behind the scenes of CCTV

November 23, 2012, 11:07 am

West Midlands Polices Letters of the Law continues today with K for Keep ‘em Peeled as the force re-launches its Wanted Gallery and goes behind the scenes at a busy CCTV control centre.

The online Rogues Gallery – featured on the forces website – received 25,000 hits within days of its April launch.

More than 60 individuals whose faces have appeared on the site have since been arrested, many as a result of information supplied by the public.

One of those – a 25-year-old man from Castle Vale – was jailed for four-and-a-half years on Friday (November 16) after admitting smashing his way into a Birmingham pub with a metal bar and robbing £2,000 in takings.

The new Wanted Gallery features the faces of several new crime suspects wanted for questioning in connection with importing drugs, large scale metal theft, burglary, robbery and false imprisonment.

Superintendent Steve Graham said: “We had a tremendous response from our communities when the rogues gallery was initially launched and, as a result, captured some of our most wanted offenders.

“Many are now behind bars having been sentenced by the courts or returned to prison for breaching licence conditions.

“The re-launched site is easier to use and includes new images of suspects so Id encourage people to flick through the faces to see if they can help.

“When the public and police work together we can achieve great things and help make our neighbourhoods safer, more pleasant places to live.”

Police camera operators Keep ‘em Peeled around the clock at CCTV control centres across the West Midlands on the lookout for suspects, anti-social or suspicious behaviour, and crimes in progress.

And Letters of the Law visits Sedgley police station today (Friday) to spend time with officers responsible for monitoring cameras covering the entire borough of Dudley.

Through a day of regular tweets – using hashtag #WMPCCTV – photos and YouTube videos we are reporting on real-time incidents as they appear on screen and show how the camera team play a vital role in keeping our communities safe.
