West Midlands: Coventry man admits ‘senseless killing’ of student

September 25, 2012, 2:25 pm

A coventry man has admitted killing a local student, whose body was found in the front garden of a vacant house.

Brian Albrighton, 31, appeared before Birmingham Crown Court today (Tuesday 25 September), where he pleaded guilty to murdering 32-year-old Adebayo Adeniran earlier this year.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 9 November 2012.

Adebayo, known locally as Patrick, was found collapsed outside a house on North Avenue, Stoke on the morning of 7 June. He had suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.

Patrick, a Nigerian national who had been studying for a Masters degree at Coventry University, had been drinking in a local public house when he met Albrighton on that fatal night.

Just days after Patrick’s death, Albrighton was established as a prime suspect and he was arrested from his home on Walsgrave Road in the early hours of the morning on 28 June.

After today’s court appearance, Detective Sergeant Harry May, from the Major Investigation Review Team, said: “This was a shocking and deeply upsetting case, where a young man’s life was tragically cut short with this senseless killing.

“Patrick was an overseas student, studying at Coventry University for a Masters degree. He came to England to obtain a better education and seek a better life, however whilst going about his own business he fell victim to an unprovoked, violent attack.

“Today our thoughts go out to Patrick’s family and we hope that they can take some comfort from today’s outcome, knowing that this man has taken full responsibility for taking their son’s life.”

Two women, aged 31 and 27, remain on police bail in connection with Patrick’s death.
