Lee Waring (born 05/01/1989) of Clarence Close, Whitefield was found guilty after a trial of robbery and was jailed for 12 years.
At about 7.50am on Thursday 29 March 2012, the trio, donning balaclavas and gloves, targeted a cash delivery driver near Morrison’s on Stanley Road in Whitefield.
In preparation, the offenders used a stolen Volkswagen Passat displaying false vehicle registration plates to attend the scene and subsequently make off.
During the attack the guard was hit over the head with a sledgehammer, although he was not seriously hurt.
The offenders stole more than £90,000,
In a desperate attempt to make off from police a short while after the offence the offenders attacked several members of the public sitting in their vehicles in order to steal their motor vehicles.
However all three offenders were subsequently arrested and stolen money recovered.
Detective Constable Richard Castley said: “Today’s outcome is the result of a significant investigation by GMP’s Robbery Unit in to those intent on planning and executing high value robberies, in a sophisticated manner, where victims are left feeling terrified.
“The offenders in this case have shown that they were willing to use violence to get what they wanted and I hope that this result sends a clear message to how seriously GMP takes offences of this nature.”
