PCC statement following Simon Harwood’s dismissal from the Metropolitan Police Service

September 17, 2012, 3:08 pm

Following Simon Harwood’s dismissal from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at a gross misconduct hearing today, Deborah Glass, Deputy Chair of the IPCC, said:

“Simon Harwood has now been held to account for his actions towards Ian Tomlinson on 1 April 2009 and will never again wear a police uniform. The misconduct hearing has finally established beyond doubt that his actions amounted to gross misconduct, and he has, rightly, been dismissed without notice.

“I directed this hearing to be held in public as these were extremely serious allegations. I felt it was essential that this hearing should, like the inquest and trial, be in public – and that all the IPCCs findings should be put before the panel.

“That has been done, but this situation may never have arisen had concerns about PC Harwoods previous conduct been dealt with properly, by his superiors and those who re-employed him. This should never happen again.”
