As he did this, he was assaulted and stamped on before the men drove off in a blue Ford Fiesta with a white chequered pattern.
He suffered injuries to the body and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
One man is described as being white male, in his early 20s, 5ft 8in tall, of medium build, had a shaved head and a Chinese symbol tattoo on his neck.
The second man is described as being white with tanned skin, in his 40s or 50s, had dark hair that was greying and of medium build.
Detective Inspector Jon Keeley from Wigan CID said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a man who was simply trying to stop an argument and prevent someone from being hurt. Instead, the men turned their attentions on him and savagely attacked him.
“I would ask anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed the assault or saw the car drive off, to contact police.”
