Nottinghamshire: Evil rapist kailed for 10 years

September 20, 2012, 1:46 pm

A man who dragged a 17-year-old girl into an alleyway and raped her has been jailed for 10 years.

Mawawe Ibrahim Karam preyed on the vulnerable victim and left her lying semi-naked in the street, taking her mobile phone with him.

She was not found until two hours later after a passer-by heard the girl shouting for help and raised the alarm.

Karam, 28, of Herbert Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to rape and the theft of a mobile phone and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court today (Thursday 20 September 2012).

He was jailed for 10 years for rape and one year for theft, to run concurrently.

Karam, a Sudanese immigrant, was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register and recommended for deportation after serving his sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jordan, who led the investigation, said: “Karam targeted his victim after finding her alone in the street. He took advantage of her vulnerability, dragged her into an alleyway out of view, and subjected her to a horrific assault.

“He then left her lying in the street, semi-naked, taking with him her mobile phone – her only means of contact.

“She has little recollection of the ordeal but found the bravery to face her attacker in court today where justice was done and Karam was handed a lengthy sentence.”

The incident happened in Gedling Street, near to Sneinton Market, at about 3.10am on Sunday 25 March 2012.

Detectives trawled CCTV footage of the area, traced the use of the stolen phone and used DNA evidence to identify and track down Karem who was arrested later that week.

DCI Jordan added: “Officers meticulously examined CCTV and mobile phone records in order to create a picture of what happened that morning.

“They were dedicated to finding the girls attacker and due to their diligent and determined investigation they were able to identify and detain Karem quickly.

“I hope that his sentencing will signal an end to this difficult and painful chapter of the victims life and she can in some way begin to look forward to her future.”
