Northumbria: South Tyneside Shoppers Given Self Service Checkout Suggestions

September 26, 2012, 1:00 pm

South Tyneside shoppers are being asked to be vigilant when using self service tills at supermarkets.

The warning comes on the back of a growing number of reports of thefts after customers have left the tills without taking their requested cash back or notes given out in change.

The dispensed money has then been taken by another person.

Detective Sergeant Ed Hedley said: “I would urge customers to remember to take all their items with them when using these tills, including any change or cash back as left behind it can present an opportunity to thieves.

“I’d also like to remind people that they are stealing by helping themselves to this money.

“It is not a victimless crime and you are causing financial loss to another person.

“Those committing this offence also face being arrested and charged with theft and ending up with a criminal record.

“We will continue to work closely with Shopwatch schemes, supermarket staff and security to deter thieves, target offenders and will use CCTV systems to apprehend them.”
