Police in Wigan have released an efit of a thief who head butted and slashed a man during a street robbery.

Between 3.15pm and 3.30pm on Tuesday 9 August 2012 a 59-year-old man was walking on waste land between Scot Lane and Robin Park Road next to Wigan Police station.

A man approached him and asked for a cigarette before he grabbed hold of his rucksack straps and head butted and punched him in the face.

The victim felt a searing pain to his abdomen and fell to the floor.

When he came round he realised his rucksack had been stolen and had a two inch slash wound to his abdomen.

The offender is described as a white man with sun tanned skin, aged 22-25-years-old, of stocky build, 5ft 6in tall with dark brown greasy hair and dark stubble.  He has a broken nose, had brown teeth and dirty hands.

He was wearing a black long sleeved hooded top with the hood up.  The top had two small pockets at the front and a draw string.  He spoke with a foreign accent.

Detective Constable Lynsey Watson from Wigan Volume Crime team, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a man taking a short cut to the shops.

“The victim is very shaken by this incident and left with a physical scar to act as a permanent reminder.

“We are asking for anyone that may recognise this man from the efit, or who may have seen someone matching this description on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 August 2012, to get in touch with us.”
