The axe-wielding robber then approached a woman staff member and held an axe so closely to her face that it actually touched her teeth.
They demanded the staff hand over money before the offenders ran off towards Matley Lane, Hyde.
One man is described as being white, wearing a dark coloured hooded top with a cap underneath and had his face covered. He was carrying an orange handled axe.
The second man was wearing a dark coloured hooded top and had his face covered. He was carrying a crowbar.
Detective Constable Simon Cropper of Tameside CID said: “The level of intimidation and threat involved in this awful crime went well beyond what was necessary to steal some cash.
“The woman offered no resistance whatsoever yet the robber with the axe held it to her face while he screamed at her to open the safe.
“It was so close she could actually feel the blade on her teeth. This will be moment that will no doubt live with her forever but I am confident that, with the right support around her, she will be able to move on from this.
“We are doing everything in our power to catch these robbers and I am sure there are people out there who can help us.
